Locals vs. Tourists
Being born and raised in a tourist destination, we-the-locals always struggle to deal with visitors. We tend to think of them as disturbing, obnoxious, camera-toting tourists. But, really, they’re just travelers who are curious about our part of the world. Oh, and also our primary income source.
Then I came across this framework from Sahil Bloom, who came across it from his friend Shaan Puri, who allegedly referenced it in a group chat. And it changed my entire conception of the Locals vs Touriste Eternal War.
The Concept
The framework suggests that in any arena, physical or abstract, you have two categories of people:
- Tourists: Someone who visits a place for pleasure and interest, usually while on holiday and coincidentally with favorable weather, leaving when it turns sour. The destination is other than the habitual residence, outside of their everyday environment. And the stay is for at least one night but up to one year.
- Locals: Those who are here to stay and are prepared for all types of weather. They are the receptive…
