From Adversity to Legend: Nellie Bly’s Story of Willpower and Success
A true tale of grit that changed journalism forever.
It was no easy task.
In a test of commitment, she checked into a boarding house for females and forced herself to stay up all night. After capturing the bizarre expressions, she proceeded to add the finishing touch — an unpredictable display of madness.
The aftermath went as expected: the psychiatric evaluation would send her straight to the asylum.
As she was planning to do so.
She Against The World
Nellie Bly’s level of commitment was unpaired.
No surprise she would change journalism forever.
All under a pen name.
She was born Elizabeth Jane Cochran in Pittsburgh, 1864.
When her father passed away, Elizabeth, age 15, along with her fourteen siblings, were left in a critical financial condition. So she had to go out in search of money.
And, in a time when a woman’s role in society was limited to the four walls of a housewife, Elizabeth worked her way through barriers and secured a position at her hometown newspaper.
